Japan quake: 30 killed; another warning issued

A sequence of powerful earthquakes, reaching up to 7.6 in magnitude on the Richter scale, struck the western coast of Japan on Monday, resulting in at least 12 reported fatalities and numerous injuries. The Japan Meteorological Agency identified over 90 tremors since the initial quake, issuing warnings of potential major quakes in the days ahead. Ishikawa prefecture received a quake alert, and casualties were concentrated in Wajima city, near the epicenter, where fires broke out following the seismic activity.

The aftermath of the earthquakes led to the closure of an airport due to runway cracks, suspension of numerous trains and flights, and destruction of roads, buildings, vehicles, and boats. Freezing temperatures compounded the situation as approximately 33,000 homes lost power, and disruptions in water supply and internet services were reported. Authorities urged residents to avoid returning to their homes amid the ongoing threat of additional quakes, with tsunami waves reaching up to 1 meter along the western coast, necessitating the evacuation of some residents to higher grounds.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida emphasized the priority of saving lives and the challenging rescue efforts, particularly in the northern tip of the remote Noto peninsula where damaged roads hinder access. The situation remained critical, with ongoing assessments of damages and disruptions to essential services, underscoring the need for immediate rescue operations and sustained precautions against further seismic activities.
