Unidentified gunmen attacked Lilong in Manipur’s Thoubal district, killing four civilians and injuring five others. The locality, dominated by Meitei Pangals (Meitei Muslims), witnessed the assailants, clad in camouflage dresses, opening indiscriminate fire. Following the incident, curfew was reinstated in Thoubal, Imphal East, and Imphal West districts, with reduced relaxation in Kakching and Bishnupur districts in the Imphal valley. Enraged locals set fire to vehicles believed to have been used by the attackers, escalating tension in the area. Authorities are working to identify and apprehend the assailants, while Chief Minister N Biren Singh condemned the incident and urged residents to remain calm, assuring that justice would be served.
This incident marks a significant event involving the killing of Meitei Pangals since ethnic violence erupted between Meiteis and Kukis on May 3, sparked by a tribal solidarity march. The earlier violence resulted in around 200 casualties and displaced 60,000 people. The recent attack underscores the ongoing challenges of maintaining peace and stability in the region, prompting heightened security measures and a swift response from the government to address the situation and apprehend those responsible for the violence.
