As of the latest update from INSACOG, the country has identified a total of 263 cases of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1, with nearly half of them reported in the state of Kerala. Ten states and Union territories have detected the presence of the JN.1 sub-variant, including Kerala (133 cases), Goa (51), Gujarat (34), Delhi (16), Karnataka (eight), Maharashtra (nine), Rajasthan (five), Tamil Nadu (four), Telangana (two), and Odisha (one). The data from INSACOG indicates that in December, 239 Covid cases in the country showed the presence of the JN.1 sub-variant, while 24 cases were detected in November.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized JN.1 as a distinct “variant of interest” due to its rapid spread, although it has assessed the global public health risk as “low.” Initially part of the BA.2.86 sub-lineages, which was classified as a variant of interest, the JN.1 sub-variant has seen a significant increase in prevalence worldwide. In response to the uptick in Covid cases and the detection of the JN.1 sub-variant in the country, the Indian government has urged states and Union territories to maintain a vigilant approach. As of the latest Health Ministry data, India has reported 573 new coronavirus infections, with 4,565 active cases.
