Unidentified Assailant Attacks and Injures South Korean Opposition Leader

South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung faced an attack and injury from an unidentified assailant during his visit to the construction site of a new airport in Busan. Emergency officials reported the incident, with Lee, the head of the main opposition Democratic Party, being conscious but his exact condition unknown. Witnesses suggested the attacker used a knife-like weapon to stab Lee’s neck, and TV footage depicted him on the ground with someone applying a handkerchief to control bleeding. The assailant, who wore something resembling a crown, was promptly arrested by the police.

Lee Jae-myung, a liberal former provincial governor, lost the 2022 presidential election to President Yoon Suk Yeol. Recognized for his outspoken style, Lee’s supporters view him as an anti-elitist figure capable of reforming politics, addressing corruption, and tackling economic inequality. However, critics label him a dangerous populist, accusing him of fueling divisions and demonizing conservative opponents. The attack on Lee raises concerns about political tensions and personal safety in South Korea’s political landscape.
