VC arrested on attempt to murder charge

The Vice Chancellor of Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS) in Prayagraj, Rajendra Bihari Lal, was arrested and subsequently sent to jail in connection with an attempted murder case. The arrest came after former BJP leader Diwakar Nath Tripathi filed a complaint alleging that two individuals accompanying Lal in an SUV had fired at him. The incident occurred when Tripathi was returning from his morning walk near Arail dam, with the alleged assailants attempting to overtake and stop his vehicle.

Rajendra Bihari Lal faces charges under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of the peace), and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) based on Tripathi’s complaint. Notably, Lal is entangled in multiple legal issues, with 26 cases registered against him in various districts, including Prayagraj, Lucknow, Hamirpur, Fatehpur, and Pratapgarh. These cases predominantly revolve around allegations of illegal religious conversion, and Tripathi contends that the attempted murder incident is linked to his previous legal actions against Lal and others.

Last month, the Allahabad High Court rejected a plea to quash an FIR against the VC and other SHUATS officials, accusing them of converting a woman through inducements of employment and other benefits. This recent arrest adds another layer to the legal challenges faced by Rajendra Bihari Lal, the Vice Chancellor of SHUATS, a minority institution.
