On Wednesday, the health ministry reported five new COVID fatalities and 602 fresh virus cases in the country. The active cases currently stand at 4,440, with two new fatalities recorded in Kerala and one each in Karnataka, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu. Among the deceased in Kerala, one was a 66-year-old man suffering from chronic liver disease, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, and sepsis, while the other was a 79-year-old woman with coronary artery disease and sepsis. Despite a previous drop in daily cases to double digits by December 5, 2023, the numbers have risen again due to the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions.
During the peak of the pandemic, daily cases reached lakhs, with over 4.5 crore people infected and more than 5.3 lakh deaths reported in about four years since its onset in early 2020. The national recovery rate is currently at 98.81%, with over 4.4 crore individuals having recuperated from the disease. The country has administered 220.67 crore doses of COVID vaccines as per the ministry’s website.
