Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper fined by NFL for tossing drink

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper incurred a $300,000 fine from the NFL for his “unacceptable conduct,” specifically throwing a drink at opposing fans during the Panthers’ 26-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The league characterized Tepper’s actions as unacceptable, leading to the imposition of the fine.

Following the incident, Tepper issued a statement on Tuesday, expressing regret for his behavior during the game, where the Panthers dropped to a league-worst 2-14 record for the season.

In his statement, Tepper acknowledged his deep passion for the team but admitted that he should have allowed NFL stadium security to handle any arising issues. He also conveyed his respect for the NFL’s code of conduct and accepted the disciplinary action imposed by the league for his behavior.

The Panthers’ loss to the Jaguars marked their first shutout in 342 games, with the team’s struggles throughout the season culminating in a disappointing outcome. The incident occurred shortly after Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was intercepted, securing the defeat and solidifying their position with the worst record in the league.

While having the worst record would typically grant the Panthers the top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, the team traded away that selection last year to acquire the top pick they used to draft Young.

Since Tepper acquired the Panthers for over $2 billion in 2018, the team has faced six consecutive losing seasons and accumulated a record of 31-67. The 66-year-old billionaire hedge fund owner also holds ownership of Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer.
