External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is expected to visit Kathmandu for the 7th India-Nepal Joint Commission meeting, marking the first meeting in two years since January 14, 2021. Jaishankar and his Nepalese counterpart NP Saud will lead discussions on energy cooperation and increased funding for development projects in Nepal. Both countries have been working on enhancing their energy cooperation, with a long-term power trade agreement in place, targeting the import of 10,000 MW of electricity into Nepal.
During the meeting, discussions are also anticipated on India’s proposal to boost funds for small development projects under the High-impact Community Development Projects. Additionally, the construction of a new pipeline between Siliguri and Jhapa in eastern Nepal may be a topic of conversation. While the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has not officially announced the visit, sources indicate that Jaishankar is set to co-chair the commission’s meeting and may engage with several key Nepalese leaders, including Prime Minister Dahala, President Paudel, leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, and former PM KP Sharma Oli.
