Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah defends arrest of karsevak

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah defended the arrest of a karsevak in connection with the 1992 violence in Hubballi, stating that it is not driven by hate politics. Addressing reporters in Koppal, he emphasized that the police acted in accordance with a directive from the High Court of Karnataka to dispose of pending cases. The BJP in the state has called for a state-wide protest against the arrest, led by Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly R Ashoka.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi condemned the arrest, stating that the individual participated in a mass movement and is not a criminal. The SSK community has extended support to the protest, and community leader Ashok Katwe accused the Congress government of using the police against Ram bhakts. Siddaramaiah, responding to BJP leaders’ demand for a public holiday on January 22 for the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, suggested they appeal to the Centre for such a declaration. Regarding the ongoing protest by guest lecturers, Siddaramaiah mentioned that the government finds it difficult to meet the demand for regularization of their services. He added that the process of providing drought relief has started, with Rs 2,000 to be provided to farmers for crop loss.
