As the 2024 election landscape intensifies, there are indications that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who leads the Janata Dal (United), might be appointed as the national convener of the Opposition alliance INDIA (Integrated Democratic Innovations and Advancements). Sources suggest that the Congress party has been in contact with Nitish Kumar to address his concerns, and a formal announcement is expected soon. Senior Congress leaders, including Salman Khurshid, have been involved in discussions with Nitish, and other alliance partners reportedly support the idea of appointing him as the convener.
Rahul Gandhi has also communicated with Nitish Kumar recently, and while there were rumors of Nitish’s discontent after the proposal of Mallikarjun Kharge as the bloc’s Prime Ministerial candidate, the party clarifies that the convener position doesn’t automatically guarantee the PM candidacy. The decision on the PM candidate is likely to be based on the party with the highest number of seats within the alliance. Despite speculations about JD(U)’s potential return to the NDA fold, the party has refuted such claims, asserting that Nitish will lead seat-sharing discussions with the 28-party bloc and spearhead the nationwide campaign.
