Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of attacks on New Year

On New Year’s Day, Ukraine and Russia exchanged accusations of carrying out attacks, marking a continuation of hostilities between the two nations. Russia accused Ukraine of shelling Donetsk, resulting in four deaths and 14 injuries, according to Denis Pushilin, the Russia-appointed head of Ukraine’s Donetsk region. Simultaneously, Ukrainian officials claimed that Russian air attacks on Odesa killed at least one person.

Oleh Kiper, the governor of Ukraine’s Odesa region, stated that a Russian drone attack on Odesa city led to one casualty. Ukraine’s air defense systems engaged to repel the drone attack, but falling debris caused multiple fires in different parts of the city. Odesa Mayor Henadii Trukhanov shared a video on social media inspecting a damaged apartment, expressing determination for Ukraine to persevere and overcome challenges in the new year.

Additionally, Ukraine’s air force reported Russian air attacks targeting the Mykolaiv and Dnipro regions. Both Russia and Ukraine denied intentionally targeting civilians in the ongoing conflict.

The war between Russia and Ukraine began in February 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine. Although the initial phase saw success for Russia, its forces faced setbacks and were forced to withdraw from significant territories. Western countries, led by the United States, provided substantial financial support, weaponry, and systems to Ukraine. Despite initial expectations of a swift offensive to recapture lost land, Ukraine has not achieved this goal thus far. The ongoing hostilities underscore the persistent challenges and complexities in the region.
