Upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2024 to host Timor-Leste’s President José Ramos-Horta

The upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2024 is poised to welcome several global leaders, marking it as a significant gathering for international collaboration and exploration of investment opportunities. Among the distinguished guests are Timor-Leste’s President José Ramos-Horta and Czech Republic Prime Minister Petr Fiala. Initiated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2003 during his tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, this biennial event has evolved into a crucial platform for policymakers, investors, and business leaders.

President José Ramos-Horta, a co-recipient of the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize, will be making his inaugural visit to India in his current capacity, underscoring the deepening diplomatic relations between the two nations. This visit follows India’s pivotal announcement last year of establishing an embassy in Timor-Leste’s capital, Dilli, made during the ASEAN-India Summit on September 7, 2023, in Jakarta by Prime Minister Modi.

In October of the same year, India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, conducted the first ministerial-level visit from India to Timor-Leste since 2018. During this visit, he engaged in discussions with President José Ramos-Horta, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao, Foreign Minister Bendito Dos Santos Freitas, and Trade Minister Filipus Nino Pereira. India, having established early diplomatic ties with Timor-Leste, has actively worked towards fostering economic cooperation. The Duty Free Tariff Preference (DFTP) Scheme for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) includes providing duty-free access to products from Timor-Leste, thereby facilitating trade and stimulating economic growth. The series of diplomatic engagements and economic initiatives underscore the commitment of both nations to strengthen their bilateral relations and explore avenues for mutually beneficial collaboration.
