The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has requested the Varanasi district court to delay the release of the scientific survey report on the Gyanvapi mosque premises by four weeks. The agency cited the need to submit the report to the Varanasi Court of Civil Judge (Senior Division), Fast Track Court, as per the Allahabad High Court’s order from December 19. The ASI mentioned that it requires time to prepare another copy of the report, and the Varanasi district judge will announce the decision on Thursday.
The ASI had initially submitted the survey report to the Varanasi district court on December 18 of the previous year. The Allahabad High Court, on December 19, upheld the maintainability of the civil suit from 1991 related to the Kashi Vishwanath temple-Gyanvapi land title dispute. The court directed the ASI to submit the survey report in connection with other related suits and emphasized that if the lower court deemed a survey of any part necessary, it could instruct the ASI to conduct it. The ASI argued that releasing the survey report into the public domain before submitting it to the Varanasi lower court would be inappropriate, expressing concerns about potential rumors and misinformation affecting its ongoing work.
