As the general elections draw near, the Congress party is preparing for seat-sharing negotiations with its allies in the INDIA bloc, aiming to devise a strategic plan for contesting Lok Sabha seats across different states. Sources indicate that Congress has compiled a detailed report outlining potential alliances on a state-by-state basis, drawing insights from its state units. This significant report has been presented to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who will lead further discussions on seat allocation with the partners in the India bloc.
The National Alliance Committee of Congress, a five-member panel established in December, played a crucial role in coordinating discussions with state units regarding the feasibility and prospects of forming alliances with various parties. Led by Mukul Wasnik, the committee engaged in extensive consultations with state units, involving leaders such as Salman Khurshid, Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel, and Mohan Prakash. A party leader mentioned, “State units thoroughly deliberated on potential alliances with India bloc parties, approaching them with an open mind and grounded evaluations based on the current political landscape and the party’s historical performance.”
In an upcoming meeting, top Congress leaders from across the nation will gather to discuss the party’s readiness for the Lok Sabha elections and the Bharat Nyay Yatra. During this meeting, the Congress chief is expected to delve into the seat-sharing formula with leaders from different states. The Congress is likely to form alliances with India bloc parties in several states, including Delhi, UP, Bihar, Punjab, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Jammu and Kashmir. Currently, the party has existing alliances in Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra, with an ambition to contest all 52 Lok Sabha seats secured in the 2019 elections.
