Former U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu moves into the main draw of the Australian Open

Emma Raducanu, the former U.S. Open champion, has secured a place in the main draw of the Australian Open as a result of American player Lauren Davis withdrawing from the tournament due to a shoulder injury, according to organizers on Wednesday.

Raducanu, who recently triumphed over Elena-Gabriela Ruse at the Auckland Classic in her comeback after undergoing wrist and ankle surgeries, currently holds the 301st position in the world rankings. Unfortunately, her protected ranking did not meet the criteria for direct entry into the Australian Open. Despite her remarkable achievements, Raducanu was not granted a wildcard entry, leaving her on a trajectory similar to her incredible 2021 performance at Flushing Meadows, where she made history by winning a major after starting in the qualifying rounds.

However, the withdrawal of Lauren Davis from the competition, along with previous pullouts by players like Karolina Muchova, Petra Kvitova, Irina-Camelia Begu, and Caty McNally, has created an opening for Raducanu in the main draw of the Australian Open. This turn of events allows the 21-year-old British player to participate in the first Grand Slam of the year, scheduled to take place from January 14 to 28 at Melbourne Park.

Raducanu’s journey to the Australian Open main draw reflects the twists and turns that can occur in the competitive tennis landscape, where injuries and withdrawals can reshape the tournament’s lineup and provide unexpected opportunities for talented players to showcase their skills on a global stage.
