In a historic turn of events, Disney has been dethroned by Universal Studios as the most successful film studio in 2023. After an eight-year reign, Disney slipped to the second position, while Universal emerged as the top-grossing film studio, amassing over $4.907 billion.
Universal’s success in 2023 can be attributed to the release of 24 movies, including notable titles such as Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic, “Oppenheimer,” the horror film “M3GAN,” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” These releases contributed to Universal’s blockbuster year.
On the other hand, Disney, despite releasing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and 15 other movies, fell to the second position with total earnings of $4.827 billion. Disney acknowledged that it still maintained a significant presence in the top 10 list, with four of the highest-grossing global releases and three of the biggest domestic releases.
The top three spots in the global box office were secured by Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” ($1.4 billion), Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($1.3 billion), and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” ($950 million). Disney’s Marvel superhero films had a relatively lackluster year in 2023, with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” being their highest-grossing film, bringing in $845 million.
The shift in the rankings signifies a significant achievement for Universal Studios and highlights the competitive landscape of the film industry in 2023. It also underscores the impact of individual movie releases on the overall success of film studios in a given year.
