68 Rajya Sabha Members, Including Ministers to retire this Year

In the year 2024, the Rajya Sabha is poised to witness the conclusion of the terms for 68 of its members. Notably, among these members, nine currently hold positions as Union ministers in the Modi government, while others occupy roles in various committees. Key figures among the 68 individuals, whose six-year tenures will conclude, include Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Dharmendra Pradhan, Bhupendra Yadav, Mansukh Mandaviya, and former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, with their terms set to conclude in April. Speculations suggest that the ministers from the Modi government may participate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, leading to the anticipation of new faces filling the vacancies in the Upper House.

Elections are scheduled to fill three of the 68 vacancies emerging in January, with the process set to take place in Delhi. AAP leaders Sanjay Singh, Narain Das Gupta, and Sushil Kumar Gupta are expected to complete their tenures on January 27. Additionally, a separate election has been announced for the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Sikkim, where SDF member Hishey Lachungpa is set to retire on February 23. Official data reveals that Uttar Pradesh, under BJP rule, will have the highest number of vacancies at 10 in the Rajya Sabha, followed by Maharashtra and Bihar with six each, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal with five each, and several other states with varying numbers of vacancies.

The list of retiring members encompasses prominent figures such as Manmohan Singh, Bhupendra Yadav, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and others from states like Rajasthan, Odisha, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, and more. Among these, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is expected to contest in the Balasore Lok Sabha election. Notably, the retiring members also include Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan, MSME Minister Narayan Rane, NCP member Vandana Chavan, Shiv Sena (UBT) member Anil Desai, and others from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and beyond. The data suggests that BJP Chief J P Nadda will need to seek re-nomination from Himachal Pradesh.
