Disney+ Hotstar made an announcement on Thursday regarding the premiere of the upcoming historical drama series “Shogun,” based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel of the same name. The streaming service revealed that the limited 10-episode series, produced by FX Productions and created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, is set to debut on its platform in February. The premiere will feature the release of the first two episodes, with subsequent episodes airing weekly, as per the press release.
Taking place in Japan in the year 1600 amid a significant civil war, “Shogun” stars Hiroyuki Sanada as “Lord Yoshii Toranaga,” facing life-threatening challenges as adversaries on the Council of Regents unite against him. The narrative unfolds as a mysterious European ship, led by English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), is discovered in a nearby fishing village. Blackthorne brings secrets that could sway the balance of power and challenge the influence of his own adversaries — the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants. The destinies of Toranaga, Blackthorne, and their translator, Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), become intertwined in the intricate political landscape, exploring themes of companionship, faith, and duty. The series also features a cast including Tadanobu Asano, Hiroto Kanai, Takehiro Hira, Moeka Hoshi, Tokuma Nishioka, Shinnosuke Abe, Yuki Kura, Yuka Kouri, and Fumi Nikaido, with Justin Marks serving as the showrunner and executive producer alongside a team of accomplished producers.
