Manipur Government Establishes SIT to Probe Civilian Killings on Jan 1

The number of casualties resulting from the New Year’s shooting incident in Manipur has climbed to five, prompting the state government to establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for a thorough inquiry. On Wednesday, Md Abdur Rajaq, critically injured in the attack, succumbed to his wounds at a private hospital. The assault occurred in Lilong, a Meitei Pangal (Meitei Muslim)-dominated region within the Thoubal district of Imphal valley, where unidentified gunmen targeted civilians. The attack left over a dozen people injured, and the Revolutionary People’s Front later claimed responsibility, asserting that the incident transpired during a mission to apprehend a persistent drug cartel.

In response to the escalating situation, an official order named Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Md Riyajuddin Shah as the head of the newly formed six-member SIT. Meanwhile, a potential crisis was averted as the Joint Action Committee of the Meitei Pangals agreed to claim the victims’ bodies for final rites. This decision came following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the committee and the government, with Chief Minister N Biren Singh in attendance.
