BJP Member of Parliament from Hisar, Brijendra Singh, tendered his resignation from the party’s primary membership and the Lok Sabha, citing “compelling political reasons” ahead of the parliamentary elections. Singh, a bureaucrat-turned-politician, joined the Congress party in New Delhi, with Congress treasurer Ajay Maken stating that Singh’s father and BJP leader Birender Singh is also likely to follow suit and join the Congress in the coming days. Soon after resigning, Singh visited Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in the national capital to formalize his entry into the opposition party, where he was welcomed by senior Congress leaders Mukul Wasnik and Deepak Babaria.
In his resignation posts on social media, Singh expressed gratitude to the BJP leadership, including National President J.P. Nadda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah, for the opportunity to serve as the Member of Parliament for Hisar. Singh highlighted his commitment to public service and mentioned ideological differences, particularly regarding farmers’ issues, treatment of international women wrestlers, and the BJP-JJP alliance, as factors contributing to his decision to resign. Congress sources indicated that Singh is likely to be nominated as the party’s candidate from Hisar, amid speculation that he may not have been fielded again by the BJP due to demands from the JJP for the seat. The move comes as his father, former Union minister Birender Singh, expressed dissatisfaction with the BJP’s alliance with the JJP, citing alleged corruption within the latter, and signaled his intention to join the Congress.
