Farmers Stage ‘Rail Roko’ Protest on Punjab Railway Tracks

Farmers in Punjab staged a ‘rail roko’ protest on Sunday, blocking railway tracks at various locations in the state. The protest, organized by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, aimed to pressure the government to meet their demands, including a legal assurance of minimum support price (MSP). The demonstrators voiced their grievances against the Centre for its failure to address their concerns.

The ‘rail roko’ agitation disrupted train services, causing inconvenience to passengers. The protest was scheduled to last from 12 noon to 4 pm, with farmers gathering at 52 locations across 22 districts in Punjab, including Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Bathinda. Farmer leaders urged the public to join the protest in large numbers.

Various farmer organizations, including the Bharti Kisan Union and Krantikari Kisan Union, participated in the agitation. While the Samyukta Kisan Morcha supported the ongoing farmers’ protests at Shambhu and Khanauri border points, it is not directly involved in the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march. The farmers’ demands include MSP assurance, implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations, and justice for victims of past agitations.
