An unfortunate incident unfolded at Varkala beach in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, March 9, as 15 individuals, including women and children, sustained injuries when the handrail of the floating bridge they were on collapsed due to high tidal waves. Despite wearing life jackets, they struggled to navigate through the strong waves to reach the shore. The incident occurred around 5:30 pm, with two individuals reportedly in critical condition.
Prompt action by security personnel led to the rescue of those who fell into the sea, swiftly transporting them to the hospital for medical attention. Among the injured, eight were admitted to the taluk hospital, while the rest received treatment at the S N Mission hospital. The tourists, comprising visitors from Kerala and other states, were on the floating bridge when the accident transpired.
The floating bridge at Varkala, inaugurated by Tourism Minister P A Mohammed Riyas on December 26, 2023, stands as the seventh of its kind in the state. Stretching 100 meters in length and three meters in width, the bridge boasts pillars on both ends, with an additional platform offering panoramic views of the sea. The project was a collaborative effort between the Department of Tourism, District Tourism Promotion Council, Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society, and the Municipality of Varkala, accommodating up to 100 visitors at a time.
