MNM Joins DMK Alliance, Secures One Rajya Sabha Seat

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan, founder of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), has solidified an electoral alliance with the DMK-led coalition in Tamil Nadu. As part of the agreement, the DMK has promised one Rajya Sabha seat to Kamal Haasan in 2025. In return, Kamal Haasan will actively campaign for the DMK and the INDIA alliance across all 39 constituencies in Tamil Nadu and the sole seat in Puducherry.

Initially, Kamal Haasan sought a Lok Sabha seat to contest in the general elections but ultimately settled for the Rajya Sabha seat after discussions with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. There were earlier discussions about Kamal contesting the Lok Sabha polls under his party’s symbol, the ‘torch light’, from either Coimbatore or Chennai South. However, with Chennai South traditionally a stronghold of the DMK and the CPI(M) unwilling to relinquish its hold on Coimbatore, Kamal opted for the Rajya Sabha seat instead.

By aligning with the DMK, Kamal Haasan will now serve as a prominent campaigner for the INDIA bloc nationwide. In a statement to reporters outside the DMK headquarters in Chennai, Kamal emphasized that his collaboration with the DMK was driven by national interests rather than personal ambition. Despite his previous criticisms of the DMK, Kamal’s rapport with the party grew after the success of the blockbuster film ‘Vikram’, produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies, which marked his return to mainstream cinema.
