PM Modi inaugurates Sela Tunnel virtually from Itanagar, providing all-weather connectivity to Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang sector. Constructed at 13,000 feet altitude by the BRO at a cost of Rs 825 crore, the tunnel aims to boost defense preparedness and socioeconomic development in the region. It replaces the single-lane route to Sela top, enhancing accessibility to Tawang and addressing challenges like adverse weather conditions hindering patient evacuation.
The Sela Tunnel System, featuring two tunnels and escape tubes, reduces travel distance by eight km and travel time by an hour. Designed for heavy traffic density, the tunnel system ensures easier access to healthcare, education, and essential services for the region’s residents. The project includes approach roads and link roads, addressing bottlenecks like Nichephu and Bomdila Town.
Constructed using the NATM, the project involved significant manpower and resources over five years, including 71,000 metric tons of cement and 800 metric tons of explosives. PM Modi laid the project’s foundation stone in 2019, aiming to bolster connectivity to Tawang, which holds strategic importance amid border tensions. The completion of the tunnel aligns with efforts to enhance infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control, ensuring better accessibility to remote border areas.
