Kerala’s upcoming four-year undergraduate Honours course will deviate from the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by not implementing the multiple entry and exit options for students. Instead, students will only have the option to receive a regular bachelor’s degree after completing the third year of study. The NEP 2020 allows students to exit the program after one year with a UG certificate or after two years with a UG diploma, but this provision will not be adopted in Kerala.
The decision was confirmed by Higher Education Minister R Bindu, who stated that Kerala will not adhere to the NEP guideline regarding the exit option and the awarding of certificates and diplomas after specific durations of study. This clarification comes amid reports of uncertainty regarding the funding of Kerala’s higher educational institutions by the central government due to the state’s non-adoption of certain academic criteria outlined in the NEP. Despite the potential implications for funding, Kerala remains firm in its decision regarding the structure of the undergraduate program.
