The Jal Shakti ministry, in conjunction with state governments, has empowered 24 lakh women to conduct piped water sample testing, recognizing their pivotal role in water conservation and management efforts. Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, highlighted the crucial contribution of women in the success of flagship initiatives like Jal Shakti Abhiyan, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Jal Jeevan Mission, and Atal Bhujal Yojna. He emphasized the indispensable role of women in the newly launched fifth edition of the ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain’ campaign, themed ‘Nari Shakti se Jal Shakti.’
The ‘Catch The Rain’ campaign, led by the National Water Mission, aims to promote rainwater harvesting and underscores the importance of women’s participation. It advocates the construction of Rain Water Harvesting Structures (RWHS) tailored to local climatic conditions and sub-soil strata before the monsoon season. Through initiatives such as building check dams, water harvesting pits, and rooftop RWHS, the campaign encourages active community involvement in enhancing water storage capacity and maintaining water channels.
Initiated in 2021 as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Jal Sanchay vision, the ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain’ campaign is a grassroots-level endeavor to promote water conservation through citizen participation. It includes activities such as identifying and preserving water bodies, removing encroachments, and establishing ‘rain centers’ in districts to facilitate water conservation efforts at the local level.
