eGazette website crashes after CAA notification

The rollout of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) took an unexpected turn on Monday evening when the government’s eGazette website experienced a crash shortly after the notification was issued. This technical glitch occurred just as the rules for the CAA were about to be released on the website. The timing of this incident coincided with the anticipation surrounding the announcement of Lok Sabha election dates by the Election Commission of India, adding an unforeseen delay to the dissemination of information regarding the CAA.

The eGazette website crash disrupted the release of the CAA rules, which were eagerly awaited by the public. This interruption highlighted the challenges of relying on digital platforms for the dissemination of critical government notifications. Despite the setback, efforts were made to address the technical issue and ensure the timely availability of information related to the CAA.

In response to the implementation of the CAA, the government established a dedicated online portal to facilitate the submission of applications for citizenship. This legislation, passed by Parliament in December 2019, aims to provide a streamlined pathway to Indian citizenship for migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Specifically targeting individuals belonging to certain religious communities facing persecution, the CAA offers them the opportunity to apply for citizenship through the newly provided web portal.
