Haryana CM Khattar and Cabinet Resign Ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha Elections

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and his cabinet ministers resigned ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, submitting their resignations to Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya on Tuesday. The move comes amidst speculations of discord within the ruling coalition of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) in the state, particularly concerning seat-sharing arrangements for the upcoming polls.

Sources close to the developments revealed that Khattar, a senior BJP leader, might unexpectedly contest from Karnal, according to reports. The BJP has reportedly called a meeting of its MLAs. Presently, the BJP holds 41 seats in the 90-member House, with the JJP having 10 seats. Moreover, the ruling coalition enjoys support from six out of seven independents. Conversely, the primary opposition party, the Congress, commands 30 MLAs, while the Indian National Lok Dal and the Haryana Lokhit Party each hold one seat.

The resignation of Chief Minister Khattar signifies a significant shift in Haryana’s political dynamics amid escalating tensions. Reports indicate that the BJP leadership is contemplating substantial government changes amidst the potential fracturing of its alliance with the JJP. Speculations abound regarding Khattar’s replacement, with Nayab Saini, a non-Jat, reportedly under consideration for the role. Central BJP figures, including Union Minister Arjun Munda and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, have arrived in the state to oversee the anticipated transformations, although details remain elusive as senior party leaders maintain silence on the matter.
