LDF and UDF Protest Statewide Against CAA Implementation

Kerala’s ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) have vehemently criticized the Central government’s decision to enforce the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, viewing it as a diversionary tactic amidst the ongoing Electoral Bond case. Both alliances have pledged to discard the law into the Arabian Sea should they come to power after elections. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reiterated Kerala’s refusal to implement the CAA, denouncing it for marginalizing Muslim minorities and emphasizing unity against communal division.

In a statement from the chief minister’s office, the Central government’s move to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act ahead of elections has been condemned for its divisive nature, aiming to incite communal sentiments and undermine constitutional principles. Vijayan criticized the law’s discrimination against Muslims and accused the government of advancing a Hindutva communal agenda, highlighting Kerala’s role as the first state assembly to oppose the CAA through a resolution.

Leaders across political parties in Kerala, including State Congress chief K Sudhakaran and IUML leader P K Kunhalikutty, have denounced the CAA as unconstitutional and divisive, vowing legal challenges and statewide protests. The UDF has announced a protest on March 12, while the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, V D Satheesan, labeled the CAA implementation an electoral ploy to manipulate power dynamics. Officials confirmed the implementation of CAA rules, signaling the initiation of granting Indian citizenship to select non-Muslim migrants from neighboring countries.
