The Byadagi Chilli Market in Haveri District, Karnataka, experienced turmoil as local farmers vented their frustration over the sharp decline in chilli prices. As the largest chilli market in the state, renowned throughout the country and Asia, it became a scene of chaos with angry farmers resorting to stone pelting and setting vehicles on fire outside the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) office.
The unrest arose from a sudden and significant drop in chilli prices, a crucial crop for many regional farmers. Last week, chillies were selling for Rs. 20,000 per quintal, but this week saw a drastic decline to Rs. 12,000 per quintal. This unexpected plunge left farmers feeling betrayed and outraged, leading them to converge at the APMC office to voice their grievances. Stones were hurled at the Market Administration Office, and a parked car outside the APMC office bore the brunt of the farmers’ anger, being vandalized and set ablaze.
The situation intensified as protesters continued their rampage, causing extensive damage to multiple vehicles. Three cars, including one from the APMC, two belonging to administrative staff, a lorry, and ten motorcycles were set on fire, resulting in widespread destruction within the chilli market premises. Byadagi police authorities rushed to the scene to restore order and apprehend the culprits amidst the chaos, although identifying those responsible proved to be a challenging endeavor.
