Majority of ED cases unrelated to politicians: PM Modi

PM Modi refuted accusations of the government’s misuse of central probe agencies for political purposes during an interview with news agency ANI. He highlighted that the majority of cases pursued by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) target individuals and entities unrelated to politics. According to Modi, only three percent of ED cases involve political figures, with the remaining 97 percent directed at individuals like drug mafia or corrupt officers.

The prime minister commended the ED’s efforts in combating corruption since assuming office in 2014. He emphasized the significant increase in asset attachments by the ED under his leadership, contrasting it with the comparatively limited actions taken prior to his tenure. Modi framed these actions as a means to safeguard the people’s assets and combat corruption, which he described as a pervasive threat to the nation’s well-being.

Modi underscored the importance of combating corruption, asserting that it has inflicted considerable harm on the nation. His comments come amidst ongoing accusations from the opposition regarding the alleged politicization of central agencies for electoral advantage. Recent high-profile arrests by the ED, including that of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and others, have fueled these allegations, with critics citing them as evidence of selective targeting ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
