Mumbai: Indian equity benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended lower for the third straight session on April 16. Weakness in global markets amid a worsening situation in West Asia, rising US treasury bond yields, which shot to a five-month high influenced investors.
At close, BSE Sensex was down 456.10 points or 0.62 percent at 72,943.68. NSE Nifty settled at 22,147.90, down 124.60 points or 0.56 percent.

A total of 3,908 stocks were actively traded, 2,167 advanced, while 1,621 declined and 120 stocks remained unchanged. 165 stocks hit a 52 week high and 17 stocks hit a 52 week low on BSE. Top gainers were Eicher Motors (3.24%), HUL, Titan, Divis Laboratories (1.44%), Oil and natural gas corporation (1.27%), Titan (1.15%), Hindustan Unilever (1.05%). Top losers were Infosys (-3.65%), IndusInd Bank (-3.25%), Ltimindtree (-3.22%), Bajaj Finserv (-2.38%), Wipro (-2.33%)
In the broader markets, the smallcaps were in demand. The smallcap index on the NSE ended the day higher by 0.5 per cent, while the midcap index slipped a marginal 0.1 per cent after a volatile day of trade. Sectorally, the Nifty IT index lost nearly 3 per cent, followed by Nifty PSU Bank, which fell nearly 0.9 per cent.
The markets will remain closed on Wednesday, April 17 on account of Ram Navami.
