A day after 29 Naxals were killed in an encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district, Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the joint security forces involved, expressing confidence that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India will soon be free from the threat of Naxalism. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai confirmed the casualties among the Naxals, highlighting the operation as a significant success for the security forces without any reported casualties on their side.
In an interview with ANI, Shah lauded the efforts of the security forces, emphasizing the increased support from the Chhattisgarh Police in providing vital intelligence for anti-Naxal operations. He underscored the government’s commitment to combatting Naxalism, noting the establishment of numerous joint security force camps since 2014 and the intensified efforts since 2019. Shah expressed confidence in the ongoing crackdown on Naxal terror, citing significant casualties among Naxals and a growing number of surrenders.
However, the Congress party raised concerns about the encounter, alleging that innocent villagers had been falsely labeled as Naxals and killed during the previous BJP regime. Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel questioned the authenticity of the operation, recalling instances of what he described as ‘fake encounters’ and arbitrary arrests during the BJP’s tenure. Baghel emphasized the need for caution and transparency in such operations, citing past instances of abuse of power and wrongful accusations.
