Heavy rains drenched the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, resulting in widespread flooding across Dubai and other parts of the country. The deluge, which began overnight, caused major highways to be submerged and led to vehicles being abandoned on the streets. Dubai International Airport, a key global hub, experienced disruptions to flights due to the inclement weather, with over 120 millimeters of rainfall recorded by evening, a significant amount for the desert nation.
Emergency personnel worked tirelessly to navigate the flooded streets, with police and rescue teams deploying across the affected areas. Lightning strikes illuminated the sky, occasionally reaching the tip of the iconic Burj Khalifa. Schools and government offices in the UAE largely closed in anticipation of the storm, while many residents stayed indoors to avoid the hazardous conditions. Tanker trucks were dispatched to pump water from the inundated roads, and some homes experienced flooding, requiring residents to bail out water.
In neighboring Oman, heavy rains claimed the lives of at least 18 people, according to the country’s National Committee for Emergency Management. Among the victims were 10 schoolchildren who were swept away in a vehicle along with an adult. The tragic incident prompted condolences from leaders across the region. Rainfall also affected other Gulf countries, including Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, underscoring the widespread impact of the weather system in the region.
