The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high heatwave warning across Kerala today, with Palakkad, Thrissur, Alappuzha, and Kozhikode districts placed on alert. Specifically, an orange alert has been issued for Palakkad, while Thrissur, Alappuzha, and Kozhikode districts are under a yellow alert due to rising temperatures.
In response to the extreme heatwave conditions, Minister for General Education and Labour, V Sivankutty, has announced measures to protect workers’ health. Until May 15, workers engaged in outdoor tasks are advised to avoid working between 12 pm and 3 pm, the peak hours of heat. Daily inspections will be conducted by special teams led by District Labor Officers, Deputy Labor Officers, and Assistant Labor Officers to ensure compliance. Additionally, working hours have been limited to 8 hours, from 7 am to 7 pm, with a mandatory rest period for all workers from 12 noon to 3 pm.
These initiatives aim to mitigate the adverse effects of the heatwave on workers and ensure their safety during this challenging period. With proactive measures in place, authorities are striving to safeguard the well-being of laborers exposed to high temperatures while carrying out their duties.
