India achieved a significant advancement in its defence capabilities with the successful flight test of the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. The test, conducted at approximately 8:30 am, saw the launch of the SMART system from a ground mobile launcher, marking a crucial milestone in India’s defence technology.
The test affirmed the effectiveness of various cutting-edge mechanisms integral to the SMART system, including symmetric separation, ejection, and velocity control. These mechanisms play a vital role in ensuring precise and efficient deployment of torpedoes during anti-submarine warfare operations, enhancing India’s maritime defence capabilities significantly.
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the SMART system represents a substantial leap forward in India’s defence technology. It is specifically engineered to bolster the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities, offering extended range and utilizing missile-based delivery for enhanced operational flexibility and effectiveness against underwater threats.
