10 killed in Meghalaya flash floods after heavy rain

At least 10 people, including seven members of a family, lost their lives in flashfloods triggered by continuous rainfall in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills district over the past 24 hours. The heavy downpour caused landslides in the Gasuapara area, with one particularly devastating landslide striking a home in the remote village of Hatiasia Songma, where the family of seven, including three minors, were killed.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed his condolences for the victims, noting that three people from Dalu and seven from Hatiasia Songma had been confirmed dead. He held a review meeting to assess the damage across the Garo Hills region and ordered immediate ex gratia payments to the families of the deceased. Sangma emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring relief and assistance for the affected areas.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the hardest-hit locations, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) working to locate survivors. During the review, Sangma also suggested using bailey bridge technology to facilitate quick rebuilding in the region, given the damage to infrastructure.
