An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was injured during a violent clash at the Block Development and Panchayat Office (BDPO) in Jalalabad, Fazilka district, on Saturday. The altercation occurred when Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Vardev Singh Nonni Mann and his supporters arrived at the office, where AAP members were already present. Tensions flared as both parties were filing nominations for the upcoming rural body elections, particularly over allegations of illegal land possession linked to Mann’s group.
The situation escalated into violence after a heated argument between AAP-backed candidate Mandeep Brar and Mann’s camp. Gunshots were fired during the confrontation, and Brar sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to DMC Ludhiana for treatment, while another individual suffered a gunshot injury to the hand and was referred to a hospital in Faridkot. The clash is believed to be connected to Brar’s complaint against Mann’s supporters over illegal possession of panchayat land, which led to the withdrawal of a no-objection certificate for a private school.
Fazilka’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Varinder Singh Brar visited the scene and confirmed that a legal dispute over land possession fueled the violence. The police are investigating the incident and preparing to file charges against those involved, while a broader inquiry is underway to assess the political tensions surrounding the elections.
