IAF airshow in Chennai today: Traffic updates, schedule, and venue details

Chennai is gearing up for the Indian Air Force (IAF) Air Show 2024, taking place on Sunday, October 6, at Marina Beach as part of the IAF’s 92nd anniversary celebrations. The event, starting at 11 a.m., is expected to draw over 15 lakh spectators. A display of 72 aircraft, including Rafale, SU-30, MIGs, Jaguars, and Tejas, will take off from air force bases in Tambaram, Thanjavur, Sulur, and Bengaluru. The airshow’s theme is “Bhartiya Vayu Sena – Saksham, Sashakt, Atmanirbhar” (Potent, Powerful, and Self-reliant).

To manage the crowd and ensure smooth operations, Chennai police have deployed 6,500 officers and 1,500 home guards. A traffic advisory has been issued, urging the public to use the Metro and Chennai’s Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) to avoid congestion near the venue. For those unable to attend in person, the airshow will be live-streamed on the official YouTube channels of Doordarshan National and Doordarshan Tamil between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

However, accessibility issues have arisen as the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has temporarily closed the ramp for the disabled at Marina Beach due to its location within a restricted area. This has created challenges for disabled individuals who were planning to witness the airshow. The GCC has also removed food stalls and push-carts from the beach and deployed 100 workers to clean up after the event.
