Canadian minister admits leaking allegations about Amit Shah’s role in Khalistan plot

Canadian Foreign Minister David Morrison’s recent admission of sharing information with The Washington Post about alleged Indian involvement in targeting Khalistani figures on Canadian soil has intensified diplomatic strain between Canada and India. Morrison revealed during a parliamentary committee hearing that he confirmed to the journalist the identity of an “Indian senior official” reportedly linked to violence against Sikh separatists, identified in reports as Home Minister Amit Shah. This information leak has raised concerns among Canadian MPs, with opposition leaders questioning why details were provided to a U.S. media outlet before being shared with Canadian authorities.

The disclosure follows a report by The Globe and Mail that implicated Morrison and another Canadian official in sharing sensitive details with The Washington Post about ongoing cases involving alleged Indian involvement, including the murder of Sikh activist Sukhdool Singh Gill. Gill’s killing in Winnipeg came shortly after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused India of a role in the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. While no charges have been filed in Gill’s case, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) linked the incidents to India’s alleged actions, exacerbating already-tense Canada-India relations over Canada’s handling of Sikh separatist activity.

India has consistently denied these allegations, condemning Canada’s accusations as unfounded. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently reiterated India’s concerns over perceived Canadian support for Khalistani activities, warning of a strong response to any threats against India’s sovereignty. Meanwhile, the U.S. has filed charges against an Indian national over a failed plot targeting a prominent Khalistani figure, adding to global scrutiny over Indian intelligence activities. Both nations continue to navigate heightened tensions, with diplomatic efforts strained amid mutual recriminations and increased security concerns in Canada.
