Arunachal CM Pema Khandu welcomes IAF-UWM car rally in Tawang

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Wednesday welcomed the Indian Air Force-Uttarakhand War Memorial car rally in Tawang, marking the rally’s conclusion after a 7,000 km journey. Initially set to be received by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, the rally commemorates the dedication of the armed forces and aims to inspire youth to consider careers in the military. Praising IAF Air Warriors and senior Army officers for their commitment, Khandu commended Tarun Vijay, chairman of the Uttarakhand War Memorial, for his vision in organizing the event.

Led by Wing Commander Vijay Prakash Bhatt, the rally started at Thoise and traveled through significant locations, including Srinagar, Chandigarh, Dehradun, and Siliguri, before ending in Tawang. Chief of Air Staff ACM AP Singh joined the rally briefly, leading participants from Hasimara to Guwahati in late October. Conducted in celebration of the 92nd Indian Air Force Day, the rally honored the bravery of IAF personnel and sought to encourage youth to join the armed forces. Supported by Maruti, which provided Jimny vehicles and logistics, and extensively covered by media partner Asianet News, the event also saw the presence of Tawang MLA Namgey Tsering and senior military leaders.

Tawang’s strategic location near the borders of China and Bhutan gives it significant security value. As a border district with high-altitude terrain, Tawang offers critical geographical connectivity to Bhutan and access to Southeast Asian markets, factors important to India’s security. Its proximity to the Siliguri Corridor—a key link between northeastern India and the rest of the country—further underscores its importance. Tawang is also culturally significant as a major Tibetan Buddhist site, being the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama and a place of refuge for the 14th Dalai Lama during his escape from Tibet in 1959.
