65,000 visit Sabarimala on Vrischikam 1; Priest calls for shrine’s sanctity

Kandararu Rajeevaru, the priest of the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple, urged devotees to uphold the sanctity of the shrine by adhering to traditional practices and avoiding items that conflict with environmental and cultural norms. He highlighted inappropriate behaviors observed outside the temple premises, calling on pilgrims to respect and preserve the sacred traditions. Historically, Ayyappa devotees carried rice and coconut in their sacred Irumudikettu for cooking during their arduous pilgrimage. However, this practice has evolved, and only rice offerings for Lord Ayyappa are now required, with the priest discouraging the inclusion of non-traditional items.

The priest specifically requested devotees to refrain from activities such as crushing coconuts and applying ashes near the temple, as these practices deviate from tradition. He also emphasized that avoiding such actions could help reduce plastic waste and maintain the temple’s environmental sanctity, ensuring that the pilgrimage aligns with its spiritual and ecological values.

On Vrischikam 1, approximately 65,000 devotees visited Sabarimala for Darshan, as recorded by the Devaswom Board. While around 70,000 pilgrims had registered through the virtual queue, not all were present, with many joining through spot bookings. The large turnout reflects the enduring devotion of pilgrims while underscoring the need for sustainable and respectful practices at the sacred site.
