National Day: Oman ruler pardons 174 prisoners

Muscat: His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik , the ruler of Oman has ordered to release 174 prisoners in the country. The Royal pardon was announced  on the occasion of the 54th National Day of the country. The royal decree applies to 174 inmates, comprising of Omani citizens and foreign nationals, who were convicted in various cases.

The Royal Pardon was announced as gesture by the Sultan  to provide prisoners to begin a new life. Rulers in the GCC countries usually order to release prisoners during holy month of Ramadan and other celebrations. The practice to pardon prisoners is an annual one that aims to strengthen family ties.

An official holiday for the National Day has been announced in the Sultanate of Oman. Wednesday and Thursday, November 20 and 21, 2024 will be official holidays for employees in the administrative units of the state apparatus, other legal entities, and workers in private sector establishments. Work on these two days is permissible if necessary, provided that compensation is given in accordance with the applicable regulations.”

Oman celebrates National Day to commemorate the country’s independence from Portuguese control in 1650. Oman celebrates the national day by conducting include parades, fireworks, camel races, a horse show, and once every five years, a military exhibition drill.
