A third group of Indian migrants deported from the United States arrived in Amritsar, Punjab, and is now being sent to their respective states. Visuals from outside Amritsar airport showed the deportees boarding buses to travel back home. According to Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney, the flight carrying 112 deportees landed on Sunday, marking another instance of illegal migrants returning to India. She stated that authorities had provided necessary supplies such as food and diapers while immigration procedures were being carried out. She also mentioned that arrangements had been made for their onward journey, though details regarding the number of women and children on board were yet to be shared.
This arrival follows another flight of deported Indian nationals that landed in Amritsar just a day earlier. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann assured that the deportees would be treated properly and that all necessary accommodations had been arranged for their brief stay before being sent to their home states. He emphasized that the Ministry of External Affairs had already booked flights for their travel. The deportations have gained significance as they come after US President Donald Trump’s inauguration, with the first batch arriving in Amritsar on February 5 aboard a US Air Force plane.
Amid these developments, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India’s commitment to taking back its nationals who are residing illegally abroad. Speaking at a joint press conference with President Trump on February 13, Modi highlighted the need to dismantle human trafficking networks that exploit migrants. He acknowledged that many of those deported are from ordinary families who were misled by traffickers with false promises. Modi expressed confidence that the US and India would work together to eliminate such trafficking networks. Meanwhile, on February 6, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed Parliament, stating that it is every country’s duty to repatriate its citizens if they are found to be residing illegally elsewhere, while also stressing that India is engaging with US authorities to ensure the deportees are treated fairly.
