BJP to form government in Delhi, CM swearing-in on Feb 20: Reports

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to hold its Legislative Party meeting in Delhi on February 19, with the swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister scheduled for February 20 at Ramlila Maidan. The BJP had initially planned to hold the meeting earlier but postponed it by two days. BJP General Secretaries Vinod Tawde and Tarun Chugh have been assigned to oversee the event’s preparations. The grand ceremony is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Chief Ministers, NDA leaders, Union Ministers, industrialists, film stars, cricketers, and religious figures, with around 12,000–16,000 Delhi residents also in attendance.

The BJP is yet to announce its choice for the Chief Minister’s post, with several contenders in the running. The frontrunner appears to be Parvesh Verma, who gained prominence after defeating AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. Other strong contenders include Satish Upadhyay, former Delhi BJP president, and Ashish Sood, a key Punjabi leader in the party. Jitendra Mahajan and Vijender Gupta are also being considered, while former Delhi Mayor and first-time MLA Rekha Gupta is a potential candidate if the party decides on a female leader.

In the Delhi Assembly elections, the BJP secured a majority by winning 48 out of 70 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) managed only 22. This election marked a direct contest between the two parties, with several key AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Saurabh Bhardwaj, and Satyendra Jain, failing to secure victory. Voting took place on February 5, and the results were announced on February 8, confirming the BJP’s return to power in the Delhi Assembly.
