KIIT sets up control room to assist Nepali students’ return after suicide case

The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar has set up a 24/7 control room at its Campus 6 to assist Nepali students returning to the university following the recent death of a third-year Nepali student in her hostel room. KIIT announced on X that a dedicated helpline has also been established to provide support and guidance to affected students. The university assured its commitment to the safety and well-being of its Nepali students and urged them to reach out for any assistance.

Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Arzu Rana Deuba, has taken diplomatic steps to address the situation, including holding a phone conversation with the Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava. She also directed Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Dr. Shankar Sharma, to assess the situation and ensure necessary actions are taken to support Nepali students. The Nepalese Embassy in New Delhi has issued a communique regarding the matter, and Deuba confirmed that the Indian Ministry of External Affairs is coordinating efforts to address concerns over student safety.

On Sunday evening, KIIT issued a statement confirming that it has permitted over 700 Nepali students to return to their hostels and continue their studies. This decision followed growing concerns over their safety and well-being. The case has drawn significant diplomatic attention, with both Indian and Nepalese officials engaging in discussions to ensure a secure and supportive environment for affected students.
