The Delhi police said they are inquiring into a complaint by an Iranian student in JNU who was allegedly beaten up by a group of students on Sunday night. A copy of the student’s complaint to the JNU’s Chief proctor was circulated on social media even as the student refused to comment. Delhi police said they are in touch with the JNU authorities. JNUSU president Mohit Pandey said the student did not wish to pursue the case legally as he feared for his life.
The incident is believed to have taken place after Indian’s win against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy cricket match on Sunday. An ABVP student leader Saurabh Sharma, against whom the Iranian student had made the allegations confirmed that there was an argument but denied that the Iranian student was attacked.
“An issue is being created out of nothing here. We were celebrating India’s victory when the student in question came with a couple of friends and demanded what we were doing. He even used impolite words. All we did was ask him to go back to his room if he had a problem. We did not lay a finger on him,” Sharma said.

According to the Iranian student’s complaint, he was passing by the Damodar hostel D block when he spotted students bursting crackers in the corridor outside room number 1. The student has alleged that when a security guard objected to it, the students refused to pay heed and argued with the guard.
“I was just observing when they started arguing with me and one of them pushed me while Vinay (another student) punched me on the nose. It was a group of 10 people,” reads the complaint as circulated on social media.
The student also alleged that there were many complaints about the students, including Sharma, to the warden but there was no response.
JNUSU president Mohit Pandey said the incident did take place but the student does not want legal action. “I got a call yesterday night, about students drinking and bursting crackers. First, a guard came and tried stopping them, and was manhandled by the students. Somehow this Iranian student also came there at that time, and he was also beaten up by the students. The Iranian student does not want to pursue it further legally, as he seems a little shaken by it all.”
