With over 1.2 billion people worldwide using WhatsApp, it is certainly one of the most popular messaging app globally. Very often, we come across messages by fraudsters on WhatsApp and it goes viral, given its large user base.
WhatsApp is in news again for a new scam that is tricking users into disclosing their bank account details.
Although the scam has originated in the UK, it might not be long before users in other parts became victims too.
We came across a post by UK’s fraud and cyber crime centre – Action Fraud – warning WhatsApp users against the ongoing fraud by sharing a screenshot of the scam.
Reportedly signed by ‘WhatsApp Team’, the message reads,
“Our records indicate that your WhatsApp trial service is exceeding the one year period. At the completion of the trial period, your WhatsApp will no longer be able to send or receive messages. To continue using WhatsApp without interruption, we need you to subscribe for any of our subscription periods.”
The message further provides a link for users to sign-in with their phone number and update their payment information.
Users receiving this message have been alerted to not click on the link or share any bank information on the website.
The messaging app became completely free for download since January 2016.
