Dismissing media reports which suggested that a linkage with bank accounts and person’s biological identity base number (Aadhaar) is not mandatory, Reserve Bank on Saturday said that it is compulsory to link bank accounts with the Aadhaar of the individuals. The RBI asked the banks to implement this order without awaiting further instructions.
In the media reports citing the reply received under the Right to Information Act (RTI) law, it was said that the Reserve Bank of India has not given any order to add people’s bank accounts with Aadhaar. The Reserve Bank clarifies that, in applicable cases, linkage of Aadhaar number to a bank account is mandatory under the Prevention of Money-laundering Act (PMLA) Second Amendment Rules, published in the Official Gazette on June 1, 2017, said RBI in a statement.
The government had notified under PMLA that every bank account should be linked to Aadhaar by 31 December, failing which the accounts will become inoperative. The Aadhaar scheme, which is the world’s largest biometric identity card programme, had triggered some claims that it is an infringement of privacy of citizens.
