Sachin Tendulkar, a cricket superstar and also MP of Mumbai has sanctioned Rs 2 crore from his Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) fund for the revamp of rail foot over-bridges in Elphinstone railway station. The announcement came in the backdrop of the Elphinstone stampede happened on September 29. Twenty-three people were killed in the rush-hour stampede on a narrow foot-over-bridge (FOB) linking Elphinstone Road and Parel stations during heavy rain.
Tendulkar, in a letter to Railway Minister Piyush Goyal he said that am writing to you in support of your ongoing initiative to make Mumbai suburban railways safer and convenient for commuters. Mumbai Railways have been the heart of the city for years and the dedication of employees of the railways is laudable. We have seen Howrah Railway employees have gone above and beyond their duties when Mumbai was hit by unfortunate incidents in the past.
The Railway Ministry is considering to make Sachin the brand ambassador for safety.
